Maths
Children will be pretested in topic or strand areas and grouped within the class depending on learning needs. After 2 weeks of explicit teaching a post-test will indicate learning achieved.
Focus this year will be on learning Multiplication Facts (times tables) and having an automatic recall of facts. This term we will also be revising all addition and subtraction facts and combination of numbers to 20.
Mathletics (on-line Maths Program) will be used during computer time. This can also be accessed at home. The Fee is included in the Book Pack.
NAPLAN preparation will focus on preparing children with understanding the questions and how to answer different questions.
English
Focus this term on Persuasive and Narrative Texts and how to write Persuasive and Narrative Texts. School focus this year is on Vocabulary and continuing on explicit teaching of Comprehension using the Super 6 strategies of Monitoring, Summarising, Visualising, Predicting, Questioning and Making Connections.
Writing Groups
The children will be grouped according to the focus of each lesson. They will write every day.
Reading
Children will be reading everyday in class.
I will be encouraging all children to complete the Premier's Reading Challenge and borrowing books from the Library. Premier's Reading Challenge finishes in August.
Library Day is Tuesday.
All children should be encouraged to read at home every day and to read aloud with someone at home a few times a week. Books may be borrowed from the school library or the local Kincumber Library.
Homework
The school has a policy of no set homework, however, the children will have home readers or Maths tasks such as learning their multiplication facts at home. There may be tasks that may require some research at home.
NAPLAN preparation.
As with Maths, preparation will include covering questions highlighted in past papers as reoccurring needs in our school teaching and learning. A daily study of past papers and questions will assist the understanding of what the questions are asking and how to answer them correctly.
Included in lessons will be questioning time to deconstruct written problems and questions and to understand what the question is asking and how to solve it.
Spelling
We are utilising the Words Their Way program, which diagnostically tests children on their word study, vocabulary and spelling instruction. Children have word sorts that focus on a particular sound, suffix, prefix and spelling rule each week and they study the makeup of these words and their meanings.
Handwriting
The children will be learning to write using cursive (running writing) and to correctly join letters. They can obtain their Pen Licence and use pen in their books if they show competence and a neat legible handwriting style with correctly formed letters and joins. Year 3 will only use pen in their handwriting book.
Fitness/Sport
Children will participate in Fitness on Monday. Focus will be on endurance in running and fundamental skills. Impromptu runs and movement will be incorporated into lesson breaks.
Sport is on Friday and the children will rotate around various sports with different teachers. Some sports include, cricket, basketball, tennis and Oztag.
Assembly
Assembly will be held each Friday morning 9.00am-9.50am. Each week half the Primary staff will participate in Professional learning in Focus On Reading.
Fruit Break
Each day children eat fruit at 10.00.am. Acceptable is fruit in its own skin. If children are losing teeth please cut up fruit to make it easier for the children to eat.
Worm Farm
2C is responsible in maintaining the worm farm for the school. Children collect the fruit scraps each day and cut up and feed the worms. Each child has a day each week to help.
Parent Helpers/ Class Parent
Please let me know if you would like to assist with the class either in the class or helping in covering books at home.
A class parent is the contact person between the school and all the parents of the class. If you can assist by taking on this role it is a great opportunity to relay information to our community. Please let me know and I can forward all relevant information.
Books/Book-Pack
Children will have supplies (including Mathletics Fee) and all books needed for the year. Book covers will be made in class and will be covered in clear contact to keep books looking spectacular throughout the year.
Open Classroom
I am only too happy to talk to you about what can be done to assist your child in achieving their very best this year. If you have any questions or concerns about your child or children, please feel free to make an appointment to discuss anything.
I look forward to a great and successful year with your children.
